Now that I know I like gouache, I’m trying out a few different kinds. The first set I bought, Royal & Langnickle, is an affordable student grade that’s good for trying out gouache. I think the set of 12 colors was around $15 on Amazon. It worked out well but got muddy pretty quick when I mixed colors, and I doubt it’s very lightfast. Because I layer quite a bit, I decided to try Holbein acryla gouache, which is water resistant when dry. It definitely solves the problem of making a mess by going over a finished area too wet, but because it’s really an acrylic paint it dries very fast on paper and on the palette. I want to finish this one using only Acryla, but I think the paint might be suited better to under painting. I was really happy with the way the colors mixed though, so I got some of Holbein’s traditional gouache to try out next. They say you can use the two together, so that’s something I’ll try.
