I’ve always been inspired by nature, but moving to the Pacific Northwest has really supercharged that by 10x. The scenery up here is so epic that it sometimes seems otherworldly. Sasquatch is a big deal up here. I don’t care much about the search for a missing link that has eluded human detection for millennia. I’m more interested in the myth and the feeling that there could be a mysterious presence watching my every move while I’m out hiking. It’s fun, like a PNW Santa Claus.
I painted Lady Bigfoot to represent the spiritual connection I feel when I’m in the woods up here, but I also wanted to depict the Instagram-inspired romanticism of the rugged outdoors. I’d like to pretend that I’m super at home in the wild, but in fact I have zero survival skills and appreciate the accessibility of our BC parks very much.
Also, I painted this fine lady using an Apple Pencil and Procreate. I had used Procreate in the past, but it’s a whole different experience with the pencil. I’m really enjoying the convenience of digital painting right now, will be doing a lot more until I get some more space and time to work on traditional paintings again.
Every time I paint something that’s 1:1 aspect ratio, I want to make it into an album cover. Since I can’t play an instrument or sing AT ALL, the next best thing is a Spotify playlist of music that goes well with the painting. Please enjoy Hairy Girl Summer…
