Last August when most of indoor BC was off limits and I was looking to explore some local flavor, I was excited to find out about the Sunflower Festival. The fields are in the fertile Fraser River Valley, an expanse of quaint farmland circled by rolling mountains.
I reserved a 7AM ticket on the last weekend to avoid the crowds. A handful of other people and I had the fields to ourselves. (Pro tip: For quality of life purposes, being a morning person is a super power) After a spring and summer in isolation, it felt so good to be part of a man-made cultural event, even if it was mostly empty and outdoors.
This year in anticipation of my return visit, I painted a self portrait of me as a raccoon, beside myself with joy in the sunflower fields.
The 2021 Chilliwack Sunflower Festival runs through September 6th. It’s a great way to say goodbye to the summer and get ready for cooler months ahead. Go & get your Insta selfies on y’all!
